VERDIGRIS – Claremore Christian’s offensive circus put on another show in the Heartland Christian Athletic Association Class 2A playoffs Friday night.
The Warriors scored seven first-half touchdowns while holding Arkansas Christian Academy to 2 yards rushing, turning out the lights on the Knights 62-6 at the Verdigris High School Practice Field.
With the victory, CCS (8-1) advances to the championship game at 5 p.m. next Friday at North Rock Creek in Shawnee, where it will face the Southwest Arkansas Academy.
Claremore Christian had plenty of ball-moving heroes, including senior Ian Feary, who ran nine times for 127 yards, and junior Deaken Abbott, who caught four passes for 120 yards.
Abbott scored three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion, Feary added three conversion runs and quarterback Tyler Stephens passed for three TDs and ran for another.
The Warriors built a 54-6 halftime lead and faced a running clock in the second, finally scoring the only points on the last play of the game. Lineman Cannon McComb set it up by returning a fumble 15 yards to the Arkansas Christian 20.
Sophomore Zac Robinett later carried 9 yards for a first-and-goal at the 9, then quarterback Peyton Abbott spotted Robinett for the touchdown. Abbots ran the conversion.
CCS finished with 504 total yards, including 240 on the ground and 264 throwing. The Warriors’ defense limited the Knights to 96 yards, forced five fumbles — recovering three — and also recovered a pair of onside kicks.
Claremore Christian scored just 27 seconds into the game when Stephens hit Peyton Abbott from 26 yards, and Deaken Abbott ran for two points. The Warriors made it 16-0 when Deaken Abbott dashed 20 yards with Feary adding the extra points.
The lead increased to 24-0 on Stephens’ 25-yard TD strike to Deaken Abbott and Feary’s run. After pouncing on their first onside kick, the Warriors needed two plays to score, with the touchdown coming on Peyton Abbott’s 57-yard toss to Deaken.
CCS also recovered the ensuing onside kick and made it 38-0 on the first snap from the Arkansas Christian 48. Peyton Abbott spotted Aiden Philips on the left sideline, and the senior raced to the end zone. Feary tacked on the 2-point run.
Claremore Christian was still not finished scoring points in the half, this time by its defense.
With the ball at its own 3-yard line, Arkansas Christian quarterback Derek Goddard completed a pass to Joey Stivers. However, Feary was there to trap Stivers for a safety and a 40-0 lead for the Warriors.
Claremore Christian still had time to add two more touchdowns before intermission. Stephens covered 2 yards to score, then ran for the conversion with four minutes left in the half.
On the final play, Stephens connected with Deaken Abbott from 33 yards, and the Warriors would not be caught.
