VERDIGRIS — Victory Christian was good early ... good enough to get a 31-15 win at Verdigris Friday night.
The Cardinals were hoping to get their first win of the season after falling last week to Sperry, 37-14, but they were behind from the start.
It took less than two minutes for Sperry to claim the lead, as the Conquerors scored on a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter for a 12-0 advantage.
Two rushing touchdowns of 5 and 80 yards in the second and third quarters put the Conquerors up 24-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals finally got something to cheer about late in the fourth quarter as Hayden Hutchinson scored on a 26-yard run A Toby Willis two-point conversion reception made it 24-8 with 4:230 to play.
But Victory Christian put the game away two minutes later with a 62-yard touchdown run. It was 31-8.
Verdigris wasn’t done. Hutchinson scored on a 3-yard scoot with 10 seconds to play.
Stat-wise, the two teams were comparable — Victory with 387 total yards to 346 from Verdigris. The Cardinals ran for 262 yards but threw for just 84. Victory also had more penalties (10-71 yards) than Verdigris (7-60).
Hutchinson ran for 238 yards and caught two passes for 20 yards.
Quarterbacks Brant Hager and Hayden Jones combined for 84 passing yards.
