Seventh-ranked Verdigris looks to follow up its first district championship since 2001 with its first playoff win since 2012.
Verdigris (8-2) hosts Idabel (6-4) in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs at 7 p.m. tonight at Cardinals Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
The winner advances to play on Nov. 22 against the winner of No. 4 Perkins-Tryon (9-1) versus No. 6 Sulphur (8-2).
After starting the season 5-1, the Warriors dropped three of their last four games in blowout fashion, getting outscored 122-7.
They managed to close the regular season on a high note, though, defeating Roland, 37-20.
No individual stats for Idabel were readily available.
The Warriors come in surrendering 25.2 points while scoring only 23.8 points per game.
That bodes well for the Cardinals, who score 45.9 points while allowing only 19.7 points per game.
According to IWasAtTheGame.com, Verdigris has the 10th-highest RPI rating with a mark of 55.04. Idabel comes in at 16th (52.86).
However, the Warriors’ strength of schedule ranks 20th in Class 3A, seven slots ahead of the Cardinals.
There are no common opponents between the teams.
