VERDIGRIS - The Verdigris Cardinals beat the Miami Wardogs, 2-0, in the opening round of the Class 4A girls soccer playoffs Thursday night.

The second round of the playoffs are scheduled for Tuesday. Verdigris (11-5) will host either Holland Hall or Stilwell. Miami finished 7-8.

The Cardinals controlled play for most of the game but couldn't break the ice until an Aubrey Lechlider goal following an Abigail Teal corner with 29:48 remaining.

Two minutes later, Lechlider made a nice crossing pass, but it was just out of reach of a wide-open Lauren Bulcroft.

Teal saw a chance on a long free kick bound just wide two minutes after that. However, Teal was able to convert a straight on shot from about 30 yards out with 20:22 left.

"We really didn't get into our game in the first half," Verdigris coach Stacia Risenhoover said. "We took too long and needed more connections. We did a little bit (better) in the second half."

Verdigris was against the wind in the first half but still had most of the chances. Bulcroft was stopped in tight about 10 minutes in, and Lechlider was denied in close a couple of minutes later.

Bulcroft saw another chance miss just wide left with about five minutes left in the half. Lechlider then had another try go just wide to right in the final seconds of the half.

Miami keeper Alexa Payne had nine stops, but eventually Lechlider and Teal were able to slip a couple past her in the second half.

"I was proud of the girls," Risenhoover said. "They worked hard the entire game. I told them they have to work for everything. Nothing will be given to them. Getting the first win is important. Hopefully we will get into our groove now."
