LUBBOCK, Texas — The Rogers State Hillcats accomplished what no other Oklahoma member of the Sooner Athletic Conference has done this season. They won at Lubbock Christian Thursday night.

The Hillcats, who led by 19 early in the second half, were forced to rally down the stretch. They scored the final seven points of the game and defeated Lubbock Christian, 69-65.

It was the fourth straight conference win for the Hillcats, and it came on the same court where the Chaparrals had a 5-1 record this season.

The Chaps’ lone loss at home came at the hands of Wayland Baptist, and that is where the Hillcats play Saturday.

In the women’s game, Lubbock Christian remained undefeated at home with a 59-44 decision over Rogers State.

RSU used a 7-0 run late in the first half en route to a 38-25 lead at intermission.

The Chaps rebounded in the second half and eventually pulled even at 60. Munir Shakir ended an eight-game streak for the Chaps without a 3-pointer when he hit the basket that tied the Hillcats.

The Chaps even forged a brief lead, but RSU turned up the defensive heat from that point. The Hillcats forced LCU into a couple of turnovers and missed shots down the stretch, closing out with a 7-0 run to post their 13th win.

It was RSU’s second victory over the Chaps. Last month in Claremore, RSU handed the Chaps an 84-60 defeat.

Thursday nignt, RSU put the clamps on the Chaps’ two leading scorers. Tommy Lane (14-point average) and Jacob Klockenga (11-point average) were held to a combined 15 points.

Bryson Krueger led the balanced Hillcats with 15 points. Aldric Reynolds and Eric Young threw in 13 each.

Reynolds and Young also led the rebounding, with nine and seven, respectively.

The Hillcats continued their hot shooting, hitting 47 percent (23 of 49) from the field. They also downed 79 percent (19 of 24) of their free throws.

Roderick Rodgers, who hit three of four field-goal attempts, dished out three assists.

RSU pushed its record to 13-7, and 8-6 in the conference.

Lubbock Christian is 11-11 and 5-10.

Lubbock Christian ended a two-game losing streak.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle with the Lady Chaps finally squeezing out a 28-24 intermission lead.

LCU broke away in the second half, outscoring the Hillcats, 31-20. It was the Hillcats’ second straight loss after they had won two in a row.

Poor shooting doomed the Hillcats again. After shooting just 27 percent at home last week in a loss to Oklahoma Baptist, the Hillcats shot 28 percent (17 of 60) Thursday night.

Tasha Parker led RSU with 13 points and no one else had more than eight. LCU, on the other hand, had three starters in double figures, topped by Carolyn Manning with 21.

RSU junior Azzie Knox led both teams with 12 rebounds. Hunter Peterson of RSU collected six steals, one more than all of LCU had as a team.

LCU improved to 18-5 overall, and 11-4 in the conference. RSU is 11-11 and 7-7.
