The Rogers State University softball team was able to tap the brakes on a six-game losing streak Tuesday night, splitting with St. Gregory’s University.

The Hillcats claimed a 6-5 win in the first game, but fell 6-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1

The Hillcats started the doubleheader off right with a RBI single to center field by Amanda Edwards, which scored Sarah Harvey from second base.

Katrina Loy doubled to left-center field to score Edwards from first base to give RSU the 2-0 lead after just one-half inning.

St. Gregory’s answered on a triple by Kristin Wehmeyer to score Cortney Reynaga from second and cut the Hillcats lead to 2-1.

RSU stretched the lead to 3-1 with a Harvey first pitch, home run to center field in the top of the third. A pair of home runs by Reynaga and Autumn Brown pulled St. Gregory’s within a run after three innings of play.

Loy scored on a double to center by Logan Zamora in the top of the fourth inning to rebuild the Hillcats lead to two runs. RSU added to the run total in the fifth inning on Taran Threet’s two-run homer to left field, increasing the lead to 6-3.

St. Gregory’s posted a response in the home half of the fifth when HayLea Harper scored on Brown’s single. The Lady Cavaliers made its final push in the seventh with a single by Wehmeyer to score Blair Brooks but St. Gregory’s couldn’t post another run and the Hillcats came away with a hard-fought victory.

Edwards recorded the win for the Hillcats, going the complete game and giving up five runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.

Kailee Neal got the loss after going six innings, giving up three runs on three hits with six strikeouts.

Game 2

St. Gregory’s got the second game going with a two-run first inning on a single to shallow right field by Wehmeyer that scored Brooks. Reynaga scored on the throw, giving the Lady Cavaliers an early 2-0 lead.

The Lady Cavaliers added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Tara Nail scored on a single by Morgan Garman.

The bottom of the sixth stretched the lead to its final mark as Emily Ledinski reached via an error. Ledinski eventually scored on an error by the Hillcats. HayLea Harper’s two run homer to deep right-center field put the Lady Cavaliers ahead 6-0.

Neal earned the win for St. Gregory’s, going a complete game and giving up six hits with four strikeouts.

Ashley Wailand received the loss after pitching 2/3 innings and giving up two runs with one walk.

RSU (23-14 overall, 3-7 Sooner Athletic Conference) returns to Hillcat Complex at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a doubleheader against Southern Nazarene. The games will be broadcast live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
