GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Rogers State baseball team was honored with the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award after a record-breaking year in academics for the Hillcats. The award was announced by the ABCA on Wednesday (Aug. 1).
The Hillcat baseball team posted a team grade point average of 3.25 during the 2017-18 academic year to earn the honor, the highest GPA the RSU baseball team has complied in an academic year in program history.
"This is a great recognition for what our guys accomplished in the classroom this past season and speaks to the character and work ethic this group displayed on a daily basis," head RSU baseball coach Chris Klimas said. "To set a new program record for team GPA is a great accomplishment, and I'm extremely proud of these guys and their commitment to their academics."
Nearly 300 member college and high school programs earned the 2018 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award. Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were recognized with this year's award, which highlighted programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2017-18 academic year.
A record number of teams were recognized with the 2017-18 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award. In total, 292 college and high school programs received this year's award.
To be honored, teams had to meet the following criteria: must be a high school or college team, head coach must be a current ABCA member and the team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2017-18 academic year.
