It might have taken longer than Verdigris coach Brian Keith preferred, but his team got the job done.
The Lady Cardinals overcame two early deficits in Tuesday’s road district contest against Locust Grove before eventually pulling away for an 8-5 win.
With the victory, Verdigris improved to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in District 4A-6.
Trailing 5-2, the Lady Cardinals began their methodical rally in the fourth inning with a bases-loaded walk.
However, the fifth provided Verdigris the spark it desperately sought.
Consecutive walks to lead off the inning put the Lady Cardinals in scoring position, and Bailey Cravens followed with a 2-RBI double to centerfield, scoring Kaydence Bender and Abigail Teal.
Jaysan Gibson then gave Verdigris a lead it wouldn’t surrender, blasting a three-run homer to centerfield to make the score 7-5.
Gibson added another run in the seventh when she scored Jackie Zaferes with a single to center.
She finished 3-for-4 at the plate with 5 RBIs and a walk with no strikeouts.
Zaferes managed multiple hits as well with two.
The senior was brilliant in the circle as well — especially late — striking out seven while allowing 10 hits and four walks.
Four of her strikeouts came after her home run, ensuring the Lady Cardinals’ triumph.
Furthermore, Gibson gave up only one hit in the final four innings.
The Lady Pirates struck first with an RBI single from MJ Fleming in the second inning, but Gibson tied things up in the bottom half with a single of her own, scoring Cravens.
A Faith Weiesnbach RBI groundout then allowed Gibson to give the Lady Cardinals the lead at 2-1.
However, a bases-loaded walk in the third, followed by a Fleming 3-RBI double, gave Locust Grove a 5-2 advantage.
Fleming was one of three Lady Pirates to record multiple hits, finishing with two alongside Harlie Culie. Madi Smith led the team with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate.
Verdigris completes its two-game road trip at 5 p.m. Thursday with a visit to Stigler. The Lady Cardinals defeated the Lady Panthers, 19-1, on Aug. 22.
