Verdigris High School’s football coach said he was proud of his team after a 48-6 victory against Tulsa Central on Thursday night.
The Cardinals shot out of the gate full of energy in opening a 21-6 halftime lead.
Verdigris Coach Travis East said he thought the victory was a “great team win all around.”
“I thought offense and defense played really well throughout the game,” East said. “We came out strong and then we came out in the second half strong as well.”
Verdigris running back Caden Parnell scored with 4:19 left in the first quarter.
The Cardinals maintained the pressure on the Braves. Not even a minute after the start of the second quarter, Parnell scored his second touchdown.
East said quarterback Dylan White helped set the tone for the rest of the game.
“Dylan’s a great leader and a great player for us,” East said. “He led our offense and did well throughout the game. Our offensive line did a great job stepping up and protecting him. We had a little small spot but they overall did a great job running the football.”
The Braves scored their only touchdown 2 minutes into the second quarter. The score at halftime was 21-6.
East said the Cardinals came back from halftime fired up. Parnell scored on a 60-yard touchdown run a minute into the third quarter.
The Braves appeared to be worn out with four injuries in the last 20 minutes of the game.
“Some of [the injuries] were just unfortunate and a little bit of cramping and things like that but they had one bad one,” East said. “I hope he’s OK. It was pretty bad, I think. I really hope he’s OK.”
The Braves (4-2) had a near miss touchdown in the last quarter after running back Vegas Hill completed a 33-yard run.
East said he hopes his team can take this victory and continue the streak next week against Mannford.
“We have to go to Mannford next week and we will play as hard as we can there,” East said. “We are going to prep for Mannford and our kids will get ready to go. Hopefully we have a great week of practice next week.”
