Verdigris running back Caden Parnell averaged 12.7 yards per carry against Victory Christian last year.

Only 11 schools in Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association jurisdiction start with ‘V’, and two of them meet on the gridiron in 2020.

Verdigris hosts Victory Christian in the final nondistrict game of the season. It will mark the third meeting between the programs since 2018.

Up until last year, the Conquerors were a tough matchup for the Cardinals. In three meetings spanning from 1999 to 2018, Victory Christian outscored Verdigris 89-21.

The Conquerors are usually a power in Class 2A, winning at least eight games in six of the past seven years — including 10-plus in 2013, 2016 and 2017 — but they looked much different last season.

Victory Christian missed the playoffs for the first time since 2009, and VYPE has it facing a similar fate once again in 2020.

However, the Conquerors shouldn’t be taken lightly.

When: Week 3 | Sept. 18

Overview: Victory Christian finished 3-7 last season and begin a new era in 2020 with Ben Palmer at the helm.

Those woes will be somewhat reduced, though, by the return of the experienced quarterback-running back duo of Triton Chandler and Solomon Byrams.

Key Returner: Chandler. Despite the Conquerors’ struggles, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback threw for 2,054 yards and 25 touchdowns last season.

Elsewhere, Byrams managed 708 yards rushing and four scores.
