EDMOND — It was a beautiful day for the Class 5A State Cross Country Championships, but a dreary, rainy day would have made for a more appropriate backdrop for the Claremore Zebras.

It was tough sledding Saturday morning at Edmond Santa Fe High School, as 5A state-championship hopefuls Laynie Nichols and Jack Vincent came up short of their gold medal bids.

After a fast start, Nichols, the two-time girls state champion, fell to fifth place with a time of 20:20, and Vincent finish strong in fourth place in the stacked boys field.

The Claremore girls team finished eighth with 200 points, and the Zebra boys finished ninth with 254.

Bishop Kelley won the girls team championship, led by state champion Ella Eureste, who clocked a 19:40, the only sub-20 minute time in the class. Erin Kuykendall of Claremore finished a very respectable 13th in 21:07.

Piedmont captured the boys title with 28 points.

Vincent ran a 16:44, just two seconds behind Piedmont's Blake Cope, who finished third. Tyler Douthitt finished second among Claremore runners, placing 62nd in 18:41.

Christian Arenivar of Santa Fe South won the boys title with a 16:24 clocking.
